REPROCESSING 101
Recycling – NOT!
Reprocessing, in a nutshell, is the effort
to extract plutonium from spent nuclear fuel so that it can
be used again to generate more energy. There are so many
problems with reprocessing though, that anyone who calls
it “recycling” is pulling your leg.
Recycling reduces waste. Reprocessing increases
the volume of nuclear waste by a factor of twenty or more.
Reprocessing also tends to contaminate the environment and
nearby communities. DIRTY
Anyone who calls
reprocessing “recycling” is
pulling your leg. |
Recycling turns waste into a useful new commodity.
Reprocessing produces plutonium that can’t be used
to generate energy cost-effectively because the technology
hasn’t yet been developed. However, if you want to
make a nuclear bomb, separated plutonium is pathetically
easy to steal. DANGEROUS
Recycling is cost-effective. Reprocessing will
cost hundreds of billions of dollars because, again, the
technology for turning plutonium into useful energy has not
yet been developed. EXPENSIVE
